CKM Sports’ 2016 NHL Draft Highlight
On June 25, 2016 Manuel Wiederer was drafted in the 5th Round by the San Jose Sharks as their 29th pick and 150th pick overall.
What Gets you Drafted into the NHL?
A combination of hard work, development and grit.
Wiederer is such a dedicated athlete, and has put in a lot of hardwork this past year in Moncton. What makes his draft selection equally impressive, is that Wiederer also had to transition from an entirely different style of hockey. He put so much time and effort into learning the North American hockey style, in addition to developing his game and putting points on the board. And, he did this all in one season with the QMJHL Moncton Wildcats. His draft selection was very well deserved, congratulations Manuel Wiederer!
Wiederer’s Twitter Reaction to the Draft:
Interview with Newly Drafted NHL Player Manuel Wiederer:
What does being drafted into the NHL mean to you? What has your family’s reaction been?
It’s obviously an amazing feeling and I’m really excited for the opportunity! My family is both very proud and excited, and have been there supporting me from day one.
Do you think we will see more German players coming to the NHL?
Well, I hope so! It’s hard for German hockey players to get drafted out of Germany, because of the lack of scouts compared to North America, but i think hockey is on the upward trend in Germany.
Did you have any idea that the Sharks were considering you?Â
Yes, the San Jose Sharks were the team we were talking to and meeting with the most. Very pleased to be drafted by them!
The Sharks have made the playoffs the last 9 out of 10 years, and this year of course lost to the Penguins in the Stanley Cup Final. How does it feel being drafted to a team with this sort of post-season record?
I think it just shows how good of an organization they are! I’m ecstatic to be drafted by such a high class organization, and looking forward to playing some fast paced post-season hockey.
What do you think you’ll be able to learn from the Sharks’ NHL Veteran Joe Thornton?
Probably a lot; he’s just an unreal hockey player and a great player to model your game after. He’s a superstar in the NHL, so I hope to learn as much as I can from him.
Head Coach Peter DeBoer had an amazing first season with the Sharks and is an award winning former OHL coach; how do you feel you’ll fit in with the team and his coaching style?
I think that because he was a longtime Junior Coach before the Sharks, will be a great benefit to both myself and the other younger guys on the team. He will really be able to develop us and help us transition to the NHL’s style of play.
I think I’ll fit in well with the organization! I will try to work as hard as possible and always bring a positive attitude both on and off the ice.
What does the rest of your summer schedule look like? When do you head to training camp?
I will be training this summer in Fredericton, NB, Canada, and will fly to the San Jose Sharks Development Camp on July 7th!”
Congrats again on your accomplishment Manuel Wiederer!
